We can communicate in different ways and many adults live with or acquire communication difficulties. Some reasons why a person may struggle to communicate are:

  • Language disorders
  • Deaf
  • Blindness
  • Physical impairments such as brain injury or stroke

There are ways that people can learn and be supported to overcome barriers to communicate such as British Sign language, Makaton and Speech and Language Therapy. A majority of our staff team are experienced in BSL and Makaton and have introduced signs of the week which are displayed on our activities board, used in handover and practised on a daily basis. We also use symbols, now and next boards and social stories as communication tools. If additional training is needed to communicate and meet a person’s needs we will put a person-centred package together around the individual.
